WHY DO YOU SEEK THE MASTER?

SONG

Lord, I give You my heart

I give You my soul

I live for You alone

Every breath that I take

Every moment, I'm awake

Lord have Your way in me

TEXT

"Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life..." (John chapter 6 verses 26 to 27)

I want us to sincerely take a deep breath and ask ourselves this crucial question: Why do I seek or serve Jesus?'  From today's reading, we see that there were those that went crossing the sea of Galilee seeking after Jesus, even as far as to Carpanaum. In fact, not all were seeking Him for the salvation of their souls, but for bread. When they found Jesus, He was able was discern and He said to them "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled." (John chapter 6 verse 26.)

Apparently, they came seeking the Master, but the question is, what was their real aim and purpose of coming? Jesus was able to ascertain the true state of their hearts; that quite a number of them actually sought Him for loaves of bread which He'd provided!

There are many today who are actually seeking Jesus for what they will eat, drink, and the place to lay their heads. Also, there are men and women in ministry today whose purpose of coming into the ministry is to find a way out of lack, poverty and for fame. One would begin to ask, did Jesus actually call them? It may interest us to know that not all are called by the Lord. While the devil has called some, others have called themselves, and some by the opinion of fellow men.

It's good that we examine our motives for serving God to see if they are self seeking or in line with divine necessities. Looking at the lives of the Apostles of old, we can attest to the fact that they did not serve Jesus for gain, except Judas. Their lifestyles as apostles were clear pictures of sacrifice and love for the Master. They'd left all to follow Christ.

Unfortunately today, there are some who are riding on Jesus' back to achieve their selfish ends! They have turned Christ and the Christian ministry into a cover for the purpose of obtaining and enjoying the allurements of this world (Romans chapter 16 verse 18; Philippians chapter 3 verse 19). Needless to say, this is a very dangerous path to tread on.

It's pertinent to remind ourselves that we can not deceive God in this matter. For the Bible rightly says, "I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings." (Jeremiah chapter 17 verse 10). Again, "for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts:" (1st Chronicles chapter 28 verse 9).

Let's therefore take time to examine ourselves to see if our motives and purposes are in line with divine requirements and necessities. May the Lord help us in Jesus' name.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father  I beseech You to search and see if there is any way I am out of course and that You will redirect me in Jesus' Mighty name.
