ONE THING IS NEEDFUL.

SONG :

Create in me a clean heart

O Lord and renew a right Spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence O Lord. Take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me, the joy of thy salvation and renew a right Spirit within me.

TEXT:

Luke.10.40 - 42: But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. --

- And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: --

 - But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. --

Are we so busy, doing the work of the Lord, attending Church services and performing good works, that we forget spiritual communion with our Saviour?

Although active and practical service to God is essential and good. Our first and most important task is a love and dedication that express itself in quiet worship, prayer and fellowship with the LORD.

Martha was so cumbered, that she didn't have time to enjoy Jesus when He came to her home. She was really busy trying to impress Jesus and everyone else, she wanted everything to be just right and everything was just right except her motive.

Her fault was not that she served: the condition of a servant is what is expected of every Christian.

“I serve” should be the motto of all the princes of the royal family of Heaven. Nor was it her fault that she had “much serving”? We cannot do too much for God!

Rather she allowed service to override communion, and so presented one duty stained with the blood of another.

We ought to be Martha and Mary in one: we should do much service, and have much communion at the same time. For this, we need great grace because it is easier to serve than to commune.

The cares of life are dangerous even when they seem to be most lawful and commendable.

Nothing of worldly nature could be more proper than to provide for the Lord Jesus and supply His needs.

The cares of this world can result to so many awful things such as:

  1. Losing focus of the most needful thing (giving attention to the word of God)
  2. Putting permanent stigma in our life.
  3. Taking people to the grave early.
  4. Ending up in hell fire.

Let us do all that we possibly can; let head, heart and hands, be engaged in the Master’s service. It was no fault of hers that she was busy preparing a feast for the Master. She was happy to have an opportunity of entertaining so blessed a Guest; and happy, too, to have the spirit to throw her whole soul so heartily into the engagement.

(Her fault was that she grew “cumbered with much serving,” so that she forgot him, and only remembered the service).

PRAYER :

Father, in the name of Jesus, help me to esteem thy words more than my necessary food, because your words and my fellowship hours with you are most essential to my life and eternity.
